How to Play – Turn by Turn

Play proceeds clockwise. Here is the full turn-by-turn sequence:

1. First trick: The player with the Ace of Spades leads it face-up. Each other player then plays one card, following spades if they have spades. Any spades-free card play is treated as a Thulla in subsequent tricks, but the first trick all cards go to the discard pile regardless.
2. Leader plays: The player who held the highest card of the led suit in the previous trick leads any card of their choice to the next trick.
3. Other players follow suit: Every other player must play a card of the same suit if they have one. They may choose which card of that suit to play.
4. Thulla occurs: If a player has no card in the led suit, they play any other card. This is the Thulla. The trick ends immediately — players who have not yet played do not play.
5. Trick resolved: If no Thulla was played, all cards are discarded and the player with the highest card of the led suit leads next. If a Thulla was played, the player with the highest card of the led suit picks up all cards in the trick and leads next.
6. Player escapes: When a player plays their last card and it is not the highest of the led suit (so they do not pick up), they have escaped safely and leave the game.

What is a Thulla?

A Thulla is an off-suit card played by a player who has run out of the led suit. For example, if diamonds are led and you have no diamonds, you play any heart, club, or spade — that card is your Thulla. The moment a Thulla is played, the trick stops. The player holding the highest diamond must then pick up every card played in that trick and add them to their hand.

The Thulla mechanic is what makes this game unique. A high card like the Ace can become a liability — if you lead the Ace of Hearts and an opponent is out of hearts, they can Thulla and you are forced to collect the pile instead of shedding cards. How to Win

Win by shedding all your cards before the other players. As players empty their hands they get away safely one by one. The round continues until only one player has cards left — that player is the Bhabhi, the loser. Most groups play multiple rounds and track how many times each player has been the Bhabhi.

There is one important exception: if your last card happens to be the highest of the led suit in a clean trick (no Thulla), you must lead again. Shuffle the discard pile, draw one card from it, and lead that card. Only when someone else wins the lead do you escape.
